Last year I had a great fandom retrospective meme, but since my LJ got wiped, I can't find it. Here's a new one! Stolen from
falafel_musings, who I found by Googling "fandom meme 2008."
Your main fandom of the year?
This was the year of Jeeves and Wooster for me. There was something very comforting, in a year full of tumult, about this too lovely chaps who live in this amazing fantasy world where everything is beautiful and nothing hurts. The cheapest therapy one could hope for!
Your favourite film watched this year?
I guess it would be Iron Man, which I watched about 12 times so far this year, and has nudged me into the Captain America/Iron Man pairing.
Your favourite book read this year?
Oh, all the Wodehouse I read this year was fantastic. I could hardly say which one was my favorite, but I guess The Tie That Binds wins for its slashy ending.
Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
Oh geez. Interpol's Specialist became a favorite of mine back in late winter of 2008, and it will probably always remind me of this year.
Your favourite TV show of the year?
House continued to be a strong showing. I Netflixed Dexter and Mad Men and lots of other shows, but none of them got me excited in a fannish way.
Your favourite LJ community of the year?
indeedsir has always been a source of infinite pleasure for me.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
cap_ironman has afforded me no little joy lately.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Heroes. They came back this season and did nothing but disappoint. My pairing was dashed to nothing and everything was all wrong. So I stopped watching after giving it too many chances.
Your TV boyfriend of the year?
Stephen Fry was my 2008 Man Crush. I watched everything with him I could get my hands on: ABOFAL, Jeeves & Wooster, Kingdom, QI, Absolute Power...
Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Oh, ladies. I don't give you nearly enough credit. I guess it would be Claire from Six Feet Under, which I only got around to watching on DVD this year. She was such a fantastic character, at turns annoying and beautiful, like all young women are.
Your biggest squee moment of the year?
The House episode where he and Wilson go to his dad's funeral. That, to me, was more squeetastic than any pain-induced ILU.
The most missed of your old fandoms?
Hmmm, I don't miss Heroes too much as a fandom; I was never involved in the broad fandom, only the tiny Matt/Mohinder pairing. I have sort of gradually faded from the House fandom. Still love the show and everything, but haven't written or read House fic like I did last year. There just seems to be a million-gajillion new folks in the fandom, and I fell behind to a point where I don't think I'll be able to catch up again.
The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Holmes. It would fit in well with my perverse desire to go backward in time, and I've always loved Holmes. But the depth of the fandom, its grandness and scope, is intimidating, and I although I've soaked up some wonderful fics, I wouldn't know where to start with one of my own.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
I look forward to reading the entire Wodehouse collection for more Jooster ideas; more wonderful episodes of House, which is consistently better than it needs to be; more angsty stories in the Marvel universe to fuel my mounting superhero slash love; and maybe a pony?
And now here's some more personal (and maybe less exciting) 2008 Retrospective Questions, stolen from
muhsilisk.
1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?
Moved to New York.
Got a job I love.
Had surgery.
Walked across the Brooklyn Bride.
Went to Coney Island.
Bought eyeglasses online.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I think my New Year's resolution in 2007 was to get Wii Fit. Not to necessarily GET fit, mind you. I think this year I want to be more regimented. More exercise, more meal planning, more writing time, more fun time. Just better scheduling is all I need.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
A friend from grad school did.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.
5. What countries did you visit?
God...none! This might be the first year since I was tiny that I didn't leave the country. God, not even to the Bahamas or nuthin'. :[
6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
Travel time I guess!
7. What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
June 1: I started my job.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting a job in this economy. Also, can I take credit for getting Obama elected?
9. What was your biggest failure?
I'll tell you, I failed at a ton of job interviews before finally succeeding. But I guess my bigger, more permanent failure was in the personal relationship field?
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
After a lifetime of never being hospitalized, I went to the ER for an embarrassing Wii Tennis injury which turned out to be a sprain, and then again to have my appendix out.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
My eee, which I am typing on right now. God, I love this thing.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
John McCain, when giving his concession speech. That poor man was so mistreated by his party, and he proved to be a class act in the end.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
The Mormons who fought to overturn the right for everyone in California to marry.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Rent. In 2009: student loans.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The election. Well, less excited and more apprehensive, but when Obama won I was screaming with happy.
16. What song will always remind you of 2008?
I answered this in the last meme, but Will.I.Am's song just occurred to me.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
I don't know. I don't think I'm any different in either direction. I have more purpose, and my job is infinitely better, so I guess I'm happier. But the vastness of New York sometimes makes me feel lonelier than Boston did.
ii. thinner or fatter?
The same 138 I'll probably always be. But hey...most of that weight goes into THESE MASSIVE GUNS. *FLEX*
iii. richer or poorer?
Well, I have a more steady flow of income, but my investments took a massive hit when everything crashed, so I guess when you factor that in, I am poorer.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Traveled to see my old friends. I am so infamously lazy; the only times I saw my friends this year was when they put forth the effort to come see me.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Drinking, probably. But if I had seen more of my old college friends, this would have been quite canceled out.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent it here in DC with my aunt and mom and brother. Next year though, Florida. Screw this weather.
21. Did you fall in love in 2008?
I tried my best. But it didn't take.
22. What was your favorite TV program?
House is still so good. See above.
23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Last year, I'd never even HEARD of Sarah Palin, so yeah.
24. What was the best book you read?
Besides the Wodehouse, I really enjoyed The Remains of the Day. I didn't really read many 2008 pub date books; I have such a backlog!
25. What was your greatest musical discovery?
fanmix. Hooking me up.
26. What did you want and get?
New Chuck Taylor low-tops
a new body pillow
a cheap Brooklyn apartment
a job (have I mentioned I got a job?)
27. What did you want and not get?
I had a vague idea of getting a new girlfriend, but that did not magically materialize.
28. What was your favorite film of this year?
Not counting my fannish response above, I liked Burn After Reading. And Be Kind, Rewind was great. OH and Tropic Thunder.
29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 25 last week. I passed it very quietly; I didn't even want to acknowledge it. My aunt baked a cake, but it was forgotten in the rush to meet my brother and his roommate (who's birthday we were really celebrating that night) for dinner.
30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
...
I'm gonna go ahead and say it, okay?
sex
31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
Poverty. I bought maybe three new items of clothing this year.
32. What kept you sane?
The Daily Show.
33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
*hides coyly behind fan* Mr Fry...but only in a nerdy mental way. He can keep his little whatchamacallit to himself. I only want him to talk techy to me.
34. What political issue stirred you the most?
Prop 8.
35. Who did you miss?
The old John McCain. The cast of Heroes I remember from season 1. My BFF Tony, who I only saw for a few days this year.
36. Who was the best new person you met?
brewsternorth was an awesome person to meet IRL. Hello, madam! *wave wave* And also my new boss was a good new person to have in my life. I can't predict, you know, if years from now I'll still look on him as a mentor and everything, but it is possible and that's nice.
37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008.
Black guys do not care if I don't shave my legs; they will compliment me when I walk down the street regardless.
Um...the white dots on the subway map are express stops; the black dots are local, and you have to take the local train to get to them.
38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
You make me lose my buttons/oh yeah, you make. me. spit./I don't like my clothes anymore.
BAI 2008. NOW MAKE WAY FOR OBAMATIMES.
