triedunture: (go on)

Back in New York, astonished at the amount of mess my roommates made in my absence, hungry and in possession of a jar of Jet-Puf, and heck-bent on arranging my room back to the way it was before my mom came and straightened it up.

I was a total tool and tried to charge my iPod on the eee before the bus left, so I was left with no books and an empty iPod for the 4 hour drive. I thought a lot about what my first totally awesome thing this year would be, and I decided on writing a letter to someone I hadn't seen in a long time, which is a good exercise, I think.

I started composing this letter in my head to my childhood best friend, and before I knew it, I was crying crying crying. Geez! How come nostalgia and everything has suddenly snuck up on me? I just hope the guy next to me didn't think I was a loony.

Anyway, here's a tentative list of Awesome Things I Will Do:

1. Write a letter to my childhood best friend, who I haven't spoken to in maybe 8 years.

2. Learn to say hello in 50 languages.

3. Go on an edible plants tour of Central Park.

4. Learn JAVA.

5. Make a dried leaf & flower book for mom, because she likes that kind of crap.

6. Bake homemade bread and bring it into the office.

7. Learn a song on the guitar. A real guitar, not Wii Music or Guitar Hero.

8. Go to a country bar.

9. Take a shop lesson and learn basic woodworking.

10. Watch a Spanish movie without subtitles and actually follow along.

11. Buy a stranger a drink.

12. Buy one of those Rosetta Stone packages for a crazy language I'll never actually need to speak and start learning it.

13. Make French food, which has scared me since I realized I can't pronounce any of the dishes' names.

14. Go see Niagara Falls.

15. Try to get an Exquisite Corpse project started.

16. Make a snowman.

That's what I've got so far. Thanks for all your suggestions, guys! I think this is a good start.

YAY 2009. YOU WILL NOT SUCK, I PROMISE.

2): Norwegian: Hei/hallo. Swedish: Hej/hallå. Danish: Hei. German: Hallo. Spanish: Hola. Mandarin: Ni hao. That's all I can think of right now..

Like the list btw, though must admit I'm having trouble agreeing with your determination to make sure 2009 is good. Probably just my being ill and grumpy.

But the French 'Allo is more what they say on the phone when they pick it up, isn´t it? Don´t they greet wit 'Salut'?

Salut

Salut !
That's "hello" in french. "Bonjour" means "good morning/afternoon". And we say "Allo" when we answer the phone.
In spanish : hello = hola

By the way, your writing is wonderful !

Oo, go you! I love the idea of increasing your wordpower in random languages. (Watching "Firefly" made me want to learn Chinese. *blush*)

Awesome list of awesomeness is, needless to say, awesome. I probably should come up with a similar list to persuade myself to Procrastinate Less, but I'm not sure I have the oomph.

By the way...

Ann-YONG ha-say-YO = hello in Korean

Sah-LAHM ah-lay-koom = hello in EA (sah-BAH el KHER--make sure you get guttural on the last syllable!--is also like "good day")

Learn Welsh! They have a Rosetta Stone programme, I believe... and then I can finally, finally have someone to speak it with! (I even broke down and went to someone's church because the pastor was from Wales... he didn't want to speak it with me though, he just wanted to baptise me!)

Oh, and Java is evil. Learn Ruby or PHP.
...no secret hidden agendas here, I swear it :P

And lastly, it struck me suddenly that I never added you to my friends list. I think I am going to do that right now.
